Robert Sherman, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and professional photographer, takes readers around the world with his images and stories of far-flung places to uncover the truths of his existence and perhaps yours. In his memoir, Dr. Sherman explores the role that shame plays in our lives and relationships. He then shares his personal journey to overcome his own shame and his goal of living his life in harmony with his authentic self. The book delves into the damaging effects of childhood sexual abuse, the complexities of navigating a marriage and raising children, and the search for one's creative and spiritual self.

I finished reading this book several weeks ago. The fact that I am still considering how to describe it to others - and still thinking about it over time, is probably as good a thing to say about the book as any review I could write. There is the sense that Bob Sherman's family story, travel story, and photography story do indeed intertwine and impact one another, but I think he could have written a separate book about all three of those topics. He deals honestly with personal doubt and struggle and I appreciate his sharing of his own experiences of abuse and shame. He does a good job cracking the door open on his experience with the sometime strange-to-western-Christians religion and spiritual disciplines of the Hindu faith. His perspectives through the viewfinder of his camera (and the resulting images that are published) are often stunning in their simple but profound telling of the story in that particular instance.
I read the book in the Kindle format but because of the photographic images might have enjoyed the book even more in the printed version.

Very good! Interesting, poetic, photographic, not pornographic, and profound! The author shares with us the intimate story of his growth as a therapist and as an adult person. The book is punctuated with beautiful photographs of his travels around the world and humorous/profound poetry. I couldn't put it down.
I read this in one sitting. I was actually surprised at how I lost myself in this book. I believe it will speak to everyone on a very personal level no matter who you are or what your life experiences have been. It is funny, brutally honest and life affirming. Thank you for sharing Dr Sherman. The photography is beautiful.
'The Wandering Hinjew' is a book I will never forget reading. Photographer, psychologist, poet, artist, healer and humorist Robert Sherman, Ph.D. gives us a rare look into his own personal spiritual and emotional journey through life. The story is woven like a tapestry from the pain of his childhood to his exotic travel throughout the world never losing sight of his own quest for enlightenment. Calling himself ‘a work in progress’ it is clear he is a man on a quest to peel away all that no longer serves him including the shame he took on as a child.
I found this book to be unexpectedly healing because as Bob shared his experiences it made me deeply reflect on my own life and how my own childhood shame had cast a shadow on the way I perceive myself in the world. This book includes free therapy!
Always on a mission to grow spiritually, Bob Sherman sees the divine everywhere he looks including the people he meets and the world he explores. If God wanted to hire a photographer he would call on this man.
I highly recommend this book!!
I enjoyed this book very much. Partly a photo journal, the author shares with us a most honest and straightforward story about the spiritual and worldly journeys as he experienced the events that shaped his life. As deeply personal this story was written, it also becomes an opportunity for self reflection and growth.
This book is fantastic! For anyone who is interested in expanding their horizons in personal growth or spirituality or trying to find themselves if they have become lost due to childhood abuse, this is a down to earth story of one mans journey on all of these paths to find happiness and contentment in this life. Dr. Sherman, using his sense of humor and curiosity along with his determination, travels the world in search of answers to questions that he is not really sure of....but he wants to know the answers anyway. In search of these answers, he takes endless courses and seminars and retreats and classes and travels to far away places that most people only dream of. The result of his efforts to seek these answers is not only a better understanding of himself, but also a better view and understanding that he can use to help his family and clients along their own journeys toward a happier and healthy life. In addition to a great story, the reader is also treated to a life chronicled with absolutely beautiful photos that he has taken throughout his journey. Bravo Dr. Sherman, and thank you for sharing so many intimate parts of your life in hopes of helping others find their way.
The Wandering Hinjew is an honest, yet tasteful, treatment of a difficult topic. It required pure courage to write, and for that alone the author is to be applauded.
Robert Sherman seizes the upper hand from sexual abuse by placing it back into its proper context as only one of many experiences — good, bad, and neutral — that might occur in the course of a lifetime. Sexual abuse unquestionably influences, but does not have to define its victims.
Since repression of painful memories and trivialization of the damage from childhood sexual abuse are not only common, but encouraged in society, the gradual unfolding of the author's story closely resembles how discovery occurs for many — only after a long and confusing process of elimination. Endlessly fixing this and improving that, while the crux of the problem remains stubbornly elusive.
Written in the easy, conversational tone of a loving father passing down his stories to his children, The Wandering Hinjew invites all of us to speak up and break the chains of silence and shame lurking within our own families.
Relax and let the exquisite beauty of Dr. Sherman's photography and poetry lift your heart and take the sting out of what might otherwise be too challenging a subject to confront.
